Total-loss cars in accidents or floods entering Dubai market from North America, claim used-car dealers.

Some used-car dealers in Dubai claim that total-loss cars ruined by floods in America are being imported into Dubai routinely as part of what they claim is a trend of salvage cars being shipped from US and Canada auction houses and imported into the Middle East.

Once shipped into Dubai, the cars are then repaired and resold as sound cars in their original condition to unsuspecting buyers, according to legitimate car showroom owners in Dubai.

According to Gulf News, several dealers said that salvage cars are flooding some UAE markets and estimated that 80-90 per cent of used cars imported from North America are cars deemed as salvage.

Dubai Customs checks the VIN of all cars entering the UAE only to ensure they are not stolen or listed by Interpol. They do not prevent import of vehicles declared or labelled by insurance companies as being undrivable.

The problems often become evident when the vehicle is already in the country and it fails the routine inspection test which is a condition for registering the car.

To avoid buying salvage car you can check Carfax vehicle history report at www.quickregistration.ae/carfax

You just have to enter the VIN number and you can check for:

  • Title problems
