Cars in UAE to have fuel efficiency rating next year

All new vehicles entering the UAE will have star ratings reflecting fuel consumption levels

fuel efficiency rating stickerAccording to Gulf News, all vehicles will be categorized according to six rating levels, which give consumers a choice to choose vehicles based on its fuel efficiency rating.

Vehicles with a fuel economy of 14.7km/liter or higher will have the highest rating of ‘Excellent’.

Vehicles with the consumption of up to 14.2km/liter will be rated ‘Very Good’, the ones with 13.6km/liter will have ‘Good’ rating, 13km/liter will be rated ‘Average’. The vehicles with the economy of 12.5km/liter with have a ‘Poor’ rating and those with an economy of and less than 12.49km/liter will be rated ‘Very Poor’.

The 2017 model year vehicles are the first that will have to be equipped with the rating stickers. Initially, the stickers will be displayed only on passenger cars and light duty vehicles with maximum weight equal or less than 3,500 kg.

This is part of ESMA’s efforts to improve the environment and promote eco-friendly vehicles, according to Abdullah Al Muaini, Director General of ESMA (Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority).

He added that the rating system will not only help consumers make their choice, but will also encourage manufacturers to work harder in making more fuel efficient vehicles.
